Brunch At Salon, Brixton Village Market

I’ve found another great little brunch spot for you all! Salon is on the bustling Market Row of Brixton, just a few minutes from the tube station. It was another weekend brunch and I was on the lookout to try somewhere new. I’d been meaning to go to Salon for so long; I had heard how good the food was. This really is a true gem of a place and you need to go too!

Salon serves seasonal food in a relaxed setting in Brixton Village market. They have recently had a makeover which I think has given them more space and allowed them to polish up the slightly rough edges of the site before. And boy they’ve done good. Salon has a relaxing atmosphere which is laid back but sophisticated. To me this makes it the perfect brunch spot.

The bar downstairs serves a small menu of snacks and sharing dishes. The tiny first floor restaurant, seating maybe 25 people, serves brunch and and changing seasonal set menu of either 4 courses (£33) or 7 courses (£49) for lunch and dinner.

I love the compact menu served in this rather cosy little place. And after our recent meal here, Salon should definitely be on your London brunch list. I’ll definitely be racing back to try their evening menu too!

The brunch

We ordered Bloody Marys whilst we decided what to order. This was probably my only negative of the whole meal. They weren’t spicy at all and not mixed well. But there was also coffee and there were killer eggs, so it really wasn’t bad at all. But I’d definitely order the mimosa next time!

I have very good friends who know me well and know that I love to share my food when eating out so that we get to try more dishes between us! If I’m eating somewhere new I always love to share so I get a feel for more of the menu. Does anyone else do this!? Now, my friend and I wouldn’t normally order eggs with salmon for brunch, as I find the portions can be a little too much, and we both find it quite rich. But then we saw the sriracha chilli hollandaise and knew we had to order it!

I now want sriracha in my hollandaise at all times. This worked so damn well with the smoked salmon and greens on rye soda bread. Because of the spice and depth to the hollandaise it wasn’t too rich and in fact we both wanted to lick the plate clean! A lovely twist on a classic brunch dish.

Craving a bit of meat we also ordered the merguez sausages with borlotti beans, poached egg and corn bread. The sausages had the subtle spice we were looking for. The smokey beans were very comforting with the crumbling corn bread, making it a rather perfect brunch dish for the first cold day we’d had of winter here in London.

There is always room for something sweet! We knew as soon as we saw warm banana bread with homemade Nutella on the menu it was going to end our brunch date. The banana bread was a hunk of a piece and it was the perfect balance of fluffy and yet still moist. But, that homemade Nutella is the stuff of dreams! It literally melted in the mouth, I felt like I was spreading whipped up ferrero rocher all over the banana bread. It was heavenly. And you must order it when you go!

I loved Salon, and I honestly cannot wait to return. This is a such a local little gem that I’m so happy to have found. Honestly, if you love brunch and cosy little restaurants then Salon needs to be on your London brunch list!

After our meal we headed out into the market to wander between the shops and bars, stopping for a few drinks in between. A rather perfect Saturday if you ask me!
