Delicious Raw Food at Rawligion, Fitzrovia

Review Rawligion, Tottenham Street
When I received an invite to test out the menu at new raw food restaurant, Rawligion, I was intrigued but honestly, I was also a little skeptical.

In the last year I have become much more interested in what foods I eat. I’ve looked towards more vegetarian and vegan dishes, however, I haven’t eaten many fully raw meals. I do eat meat and dairy (love them both), so often an element of my meal is made up of one or both of these. When I have tried a fully raw meal I’ve been left feeling not quite satisfied, as though I need something else to eat. A raw snack sure, but a meal, no.

Well, that has all changed people! Rawligion serves interesting and delicious raw food that makes me think, why the heck do I not eat like this more often!

Rawligion is the brain child from John Tabatabai, former international poker player. After becoming ill due to his hectic lifestyle, he began to change his diet and realised the health benefits of moving to a raw food diet. With Rawligion he wants to change existing perceptions of plant-based food – and I definitely think he’s done that.

The Food

The technology that is going on behind the scenes is insane. John really has searched the globe to find the best way to produce every element of his business, from the triple filtered water, the Oji Cold Drip Coffee Tower from Tokyo and to the best ingredients from around the world no matter how hard they are to get! The attention to detail and passion behind Rawligion is incredible and rather inspiring.

Let’s start with the savoury dishes we tried. The Pad Thai was made up of carrot, courgette, cabbage and mung bean sprouts with a tangy thai-style sauce. Having recently visited Thailand, I have a new found love for their food and this was a great take on pad thai. The four key flavours were in play – sour, sweet, creamy and salty.

The Kelp Noodles in Pesto were potentially my favourite savoury dish of the night. The noodles really did hold the texture of pasta (one of my true loves) and the pesto was so creamy. I think this may be one of the more expensive dishes because kelp noodles are so hard to source well, but believe me, it’s well worth it!

The Falafel really surprised me too – I couldn’t believe they are completely raw! They are dehyrated and take like 18 hours to make, so they are very precious little things. Ingredients include pumpkin seeds, sun dried tomatoes, tahini and spices. The hummus that accompanied them was also a new revelation to me. No chickpeas here, sesame seeds and courgette are the main players. It was lovely and zesty; I could have eaten it by the spoonful!

Again the Tabbouleh rivaled ones I’ve tried before it. The main ingredient here is hemp seeds, but there was still the mint, parsley and lemon juice required for that authentic Tabbouleh flavour.

Now let’s talk about the sweet options available at Rawligion. They are good, really really good.

Now, if you are a chocolate fiend then you will love the Chocolate Torte! I think Katy and Claire will agree with me when I say they taste incredibly indulgent and naughty!

The Strawberry Cheesecake made up mainly of fermented sunflower seeds had a great texture with a fresh and light strawberry flavour. I really enjoyed the sharp and tangy Chi Lime Pie. The perfect amount of lime for me.

I am saving my absolute favourite for last: the Millionaire Shortcakes. MAN THESE ARE GOOD. For me it is the crunchy crust (main ingredient being buckwheaties) and the silky caramel (almond butter and yacon syrup) that make this sweet treat an absolute delight. I 100% need to learn how to make these at home.

The biggest surprise of the night? Apart from how freaking delicious everything was, was how full I felt. I tried a bit of everything yes, but we didn’t eat masses, and I felt completely satisfied and full but without that ‘bleugh’ full feeling.

The Drinks

We had a fab tasting session trying to guess some of the ingredients in the different juices. Each juice has been created for a reason – whether to heal, cleanse, calm or invigorate.

Pretty in Pink I think was my favourite of the juices. The ingredients include pomegranate, burdock root, aloe vera, tomato, rose water and a whole host of special ingredients that make up the ‘skin tonic’ added to it. I normally detest anything rose flavoured but it was the perfect blend and very refreshing.

I have to talk about the Brain Boosting Milk too. The walnuts used give it a great taste with the vanilla and medjool dates. I took some of this home and enjoyed in on my raw granola (homemade FYI!) the next day!

Why you need to go to Rawligion

Raw food is definitely not for everyone, and I will never give up my favourite foods like pizza or meat, but what the food at Rawligion has shown me is that raw food can be equally as good and there is definitely a place for it in my diet. It’s all about balance, right!?

If you are at all interested in trying raw food then please head down. You will be amazed at how delicious raw food can be. The food at Rawligion is creative, tasty, filling and most importantly good for you. Also, I just have to point out the incredible passion from John, I had such a great evening listening to him talk about all aspects of Rawligion.

*I was invited to try the menu at Rawligion but views remain my own, including how insanely good the Millionaire slice is!

This place looks amazing!! Though I love pizza and other less healthy foods I like to balance them out with healthy vegan dishes, I need to check Rawlington out.
