London Wine Week 23-29 May

London Wine Week 2016
DrinkUp.London is back with its third London Wine Week. From the same hosts that brought us the very fun London Cocktail Week, #lww16 is returning to Devonshire Square in East London.

Over the 7 days there will be more than 500 different wines available to try as part of a London Wine Week flight or offer. But it’s not just wine on offer, there will also be a series of long table banquets, pop-ups and unique tasting events. You’ll need to buy a wristband for £10 which will get you entry into all the good stuff.

As well as the ‘Hub’ in and around Devonshire Square there are over 100 venues across the city that are throwing open their doors offering £5 tasting wine flights and specially created food and drink pairings for those wearing a festival wristband. It’s definitely the festival wristband to be seen in this week!

Last night I went to check out the opening night of London Wine Week with the lovely Mayfair Office Girl. We arrived just after 6pm and already seats were taken and glasses of wine were flowing. The hub, where you can pick up your wristbands for the week, is in the beautiful Devonshire Square. It was raining when we arrived so I was glad of the roof that covers the square, but as the skies cleared and the evening sun shone you really do feel like you’re outside. A lovely spot to enjoy a glass or two of wine.

We had to try the flight of English Sparkling wine from Nyetimber first. I am a big fan of English Sparkling wine after going on a tasting and tour of the Ridgeview Easte a couple of years ago.  Stefan was on hand to talk us through the three different wines, explaining the grapes and blends used and the processes adopted by Nyetimber. Surprisingly the rose was my favourite, it’s strong berry colour matches the summery smell and although it is fruity in taste it is lovely and dry and quite refreshing for a summers day. I’m no connoisseur but I really enjoyed this!  And at just £5 for the flight I think it’s very good value.

There are a couple of different wine bars to explore here including Vins de Provance Le Beach Bar out in the courtyard offering a choice of 12 delicously dry, fruity and refreshing rose wines from the Provance region.  Again you can enjoy a wine flight of three wines for just £5.

You don’t have to drink wine all night, there is also the DrinkUp London Vermouth Bar. I tried the Negroni Sbagliato, mainly because the name but also I love an Aperol Spritz so knew this would be up my street (Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato, Bitter Tuve topped with Martini Prosecco and garnished with grapefruit). More pink in colour this was rather fruity and very good indeed.
