An Epic Mezze Style Brunch at Firedog, Fitzrovia

What an epic way to brunch in London! This meze breakfast from Firedog is alternative and delicious!

I’ve never hidden my love for small plate dining and I also love my brunches, so the breakfast mezze at Firedog is pretty much a match made in heaven for me!

Brunches are not all about avocado on toast or poached eggs, though I do love them both dearly, but, sometimes it’s nice to try a new kind of brunch. And Firedog is doing it a little differently and bringing it on the brunch front!

The homemade jams and warm bread part of the breakfast meze at Firedog, just moments from Oxford Street.

As soon as they opened earlier this year I knew I had to try their breakfast meze. The first time I went I was kindly invited to try it, the second time I took my friend for her birthday. Both times I loved it.

Why? Because for £18 per person you get to dig into 12 different little dishes plus bread! And believe me you will leave feeling full and very much brunch satisfied.

Firedog is located just off Oxford Street and open throughout the day from 11am serving an Aegean-inspired menu.

The Food

Like I mentioned, the breakfast meze is a whole load of delicious food. Everything you see below is brought to your table for you to devour.

Selection of Firedog jams, compound butter / Lemon curd / Clotted cream, organic honeycomb / Tomatoes, purple basil, olive oil / Cucumber, lemon zest, poppy seeds / Unsalted young cheese, sour cherry compote / Freshly made Lor with walnuts, thyme, olive oil / Wood roasted tahini with caroub molasses / Aegean olives / Sundried tomato & pepper paste / Grilled halloumi, feta/ Sujuk, charred spring onions / House chilli eggs / Grilled sourdough & flatbread

The breakfast mezze is filled with delicious and interesting food, there’s not an avocado in sight! And that’s okay people.

We tuck into the hot dishes first and I go straight for the House chilli eggs. I then add some of the beautifully fragrant tomatoes before adding a little feta to the mix. This is a heavenly mouthful of food! These scrambled eggs have a little harrisa swirled through them with a touch of chilli so they have a little kick. Now, these are so good I now make my version at home at least twice a week.

The house chilli eggs from Firedog are so delicious! Since trying them I make chilli eggs at home!

I loved the Sujuk (spicy sausage) with the spring onions, it has a warm spice that again lends itself to the tomatoes and also the grilled halloumi.

There are a variety of cheeses, jams and fruits on the brunch menu at Firedog.

I’m a condiment queen! So I loved all the jams and spreads that could be added to the cheeses or just straight onto the breads.  The tahini with caroub molasses may have been my favourite, though the clotted cream with honeycomb was also a strong contender.

The breakfast meze is full of opposites: salty and sweet, spicy and creamy, crunchy and smooth, hot and cold. Which is why I loved it so much. You definitely won’t get bored of all the flavours and textures!

The Verdict

I think it’s safe to say I think highly of Firedog. It might be a bit different to the dishes you are used to seeing on a brunch menu, but thats a very good thing. The chefs have created a menu that is interesting, you’ll definitely leave trying something you’ve not tasted before. The main menu looks just as impressive, so next on my list is lunch.

I think everyone should start their day with a breakfast meze, I’m sure we’d all be happier!

Where is your favourite place to brunch in London? Where should I go on my brunch quest next!?

We’ve been to FIredog before for the brunch and enjoyed it too. Wasn’t so keen on the really loud music but hopefully they’ve turned it down since!

Yes, I do remember the music being quite loud! But luckily the food is good so makes up for it!
