3 Courses Of Travel: My Perfect Travel Itinerary

Indonesia Honeymoon

Do you have a dream trip that you’ve been planning for years? Or is there a travel formula you always use to plan each trip you make? I often think about what my most perfect holiday would include. I don’t think I could just travel to one kind of place or take just one kind of trip for the rest of my life. That’s not what travelling is. It’s about exploring different types of countries and cultures, different climates and different cuisines.

I’ve talked about how I plan my perfect city break before. But if I could choose the perfect travel menu, with just three courses, where and what would I choose to do? Like I mentioned, I don’t think travel is about just trying one style or destination, it’s definitely about mixing it up!

So below is my perfect travel menu: my starter (short haul), main (long haul) and dessert (lasting impression). It’s making me travel hungry just thinking about it!

My Top Short Haul Trip

Living in England, a short haul holiday means keeping it to Great Britain or Europe. Do I mind this? No way! Yes, I have fallen in love with Southeast Asia and I’m about to go to South America for the first time which I’m sure will fill me with more love. But, I absolutely adore a city break in Europe.

A perfect city break

I just feel each city holds a completely different character, history and style. I love getting lost in a city for a few days; walking everywhere, taking in all the architecture and culture around me and trying as much of the local food as possible.

This does not mean to say I don’t enjoy exploring the UK. But it’s definitely something I need to do more. This year I have already spent time in the Peak District and Bath and had a great time in both, even though completely different.

Peak District Landscape ms, architecture, food and just general way of life!

But there are two short haul spots top of my list: Iceland and San Sebastian. Iceland for the mesmerising landscapes and San Sebastian for all the food.

My perfect long haul holiday

Before my honeymoon 3 years ago I had barely left Europe. Growing up we spent our time as a family visiting many different parts of Europe but never really went further afield.

Spending three weeks traveling around Indonesia for our honeymoon gave me the travel bug and completely changed my idea of the perfect travel itinerary!

If I’m going to spend 10+ hours on a flight to a far flung destination I most definitely won’t be staying in the same place for the whole time.

Trekking in Chiang Mai

I love to start my trip with some adventure and outdoor activities! On our recent trip to Thailand that meant a 2 day trek into the jungle. When I go to Peru in 2 weeks, we will be kicking off with a 4 day trek up to Machu Picchu (yes, that’s right, 4 days… let’s hope I make it to the top!).

Then you need some much needed chill time and time to explore your destination a little more. Maybe take some interesting day trips from your base and eat as much local food as possible between a few cocktails, of course!

Seminyak, Bali

And then. Then comes the luxury! My perfect long haul trip ends on a paradise beach, sipping more cocktails and reading my book. The. Dream.

The final course

Places that leave lasting impressions on me are usually destinations that are so very different to my own daily life. That’s doesn’t necessarily rule out place in the UK. I had the best time in the Peak District, even though we were only there for 2 days. But the rugged countryside is something I’ve not seen before, even though I have lived in England my whole life! But compared to the concrete jungle of London, which is where I have spent the majority of my life, it seemed so different and refreshing.

For me, the final course to my perfect travel itinerary would be Indonesia. Maybe this is because the country marked my first proper dip into travelling, but it’s somewhere I often think about and want to return to as I feel we only just touched the surface of what the country has to offer.

Borobudur, Java

Each island we visited was completely different to the one before and there is so many different things to see and do. Although Bali is completely different to the rest of Indonesia, I can’t stop thinking about the wonderful people on the island and the way of life there. It’s somewhere I’ll never forget.
