FishWorks, Marylebone

Review of FishWorks, Marylebone
I often meet my Dad somewhere along Marylebone High Street for food or drinks when we’re due a catch up. It’s the perfect spot for us all to meet (brother and husband included) and there is always a new place for us to try. We used to live very close by to the High Street when I was rather wee, but lots has changed since then so we’re re-aquatinting ourselves with the offerings. We have walked past the FishWorks so many times and I know it’s somewhere my Dad was dying to try. So, when it was his birthday a few weeks ago I know straight away where we were going to take him!

FishWorks is half way up Marylebone High Street and sits behind a fishmonger. When I first walked past the restaurant, I didn’t actually realise it was there! You walk through the fishmongers to get to the restaurant at the back – you definitely knew the fish is nice and fresh!

Whilst we looked through the menu we started with oven baked sourdough with freshly made aioli and salsa verde and home-made taramasalata, which was delicious and utterly moreish. It was lighter and creamier to the normal variation I have. A great start to the meal!

I don’t know exactly how long we spent looking through the menu, but it must have been at least 20 minutes! Everything sounded amazing. It is quite a large menu and there are lots of different options available: pastas, stews, risottos, as well as many different fillets on offer. In the end we all went for something different but stuck to the simple fillet.

My Dad ordered the day boat Dover sole pan-fried a la Meuniere. I always remember my Dad ordering this growing up so I’m glad he could order it on his birthday. La Meuniere means the sole is dusted in flour before frying in butter and is finished with lemon and parsley. So simple, so delicious. He was over the moon.

We also ordered one of the daily specials, which for the life of me I can’t remember which fish! But it came drizzled in pesto and served on green beans and according to D it was very good. I ordered the oven-roasted sea bass with fresh lemon thyme and oh my, this was perfectly cooked and the flavour delicate. I really loved it. We also ordered new potatoes and spinach with pine nuts for the table. I think iron rich spinach goes so well with buttery fish, I always partner them up.

We were pretty full by this point having eaten all the bread but we couldn’t resist dessert. Dad ordered the apple crumble with crème anglaise, which he said was delightful. We ordered the fresh lemon zest tart with raspberry sorbet. This was incredible! The tart was so creamy with the right level of sharpness with buttery pastry and the fresh and bright raspberry sorbet – it’s the perfect match.

We really enjoyed our meal here. The fish is of great quality, the staff are knowledgable and helpful and there was a lovely atmosphere in here. It was a Tuesday and not all the tables were full, but there was still a buzz. It felt like it was full of locals, which is often the case in Marylebone, it’s the main reason I love the area so much. I will most definitely be back.

I’ve never heard of Fish Works before – I often meet my mum near Marylebone (as she gets the overground up to London) so will have to take her here! I love the plates as well! x
