I made my first trip to The Riding House Cafe last weekend to meet some friends for brunch and a good catch-up. I was really looking forward to it. My mum actually owned one of the flats above the cafe in the 70s; just imagine how cool Fitzrovia would have been then! I love this part of London.
The place just oozes coolness; no expense spared or detail overlooked. It is beautifully designed. I imagine a great spot for cocktails in the evening.
I so wanted to love my meal here. I ended up ordering eggs royal, I know it’s a very standard thing to order but I was craving it and couldn’t think of anything else!
I’ll start with the good points first – the juices are delicious and fresh. I went for the Rickshaw. Two friends ordered the sweetcorn hash brown, which they said was really good and another friend ordered the prawn superfood salad – the prawns looked amazing.
Mine wasn’t so good. Eggs royal are not very hard to get right, and actually, the eggs, salmon and hollandaise were all good. It was the muffins that really let it down. They were so dry and stale; like cardboard. I ended up leaving one completely, I suppose I saved on my carb intake for the day! I don’t like to be negative about restaurants but I just feel that at £10.50 they should be able to get the muffins right. It was a shame because everyone I had spoken to had given The Riding House Cafe positive reviews. I definitely want to go back; I spotted the pancakes and the chorizo and hash browns come out to the table next to us, both looked delicious! I’ve also heard the burgers are pretty good too…
